Have you ever known of an army that went to war without a strategy?Battles are won and lost on the strategy table.Strategy definition is the core of success for any venture.Brands that know the importance of having a marketing strategy take their time and commit financial resources to creating a marketing strategy because they know that the Return on investment will be rewarding.

Social Media Marketing is one of the digital marketing types that has proven to be highly effective in executing marketing campaigns.Brands with a clearly defined marketing strategy have a high rate of winning on social media.Marketing strategies are unique to brands but the following steps will give you a general guide in creating your own unique strategy that will make you a winner in the social media market

Step 1. Have a Plan

Having a plan entails you being able to answer these questions:

 Who is my audience?

There is always a unique audience for a unique product or service. You must have a target audience and you must be able to define them by their demograghics ie by age, location, education etc. psychographic behaviours, ie interests, spending habits, hobbies etc.Social Media Platforms have custom fields where you can select your target audience.

What do I want to promote?

You need to know about your products and services thoroughly so that you will able to present the features, benefits convincingly to your audience and provide the accurate answers to question from them about your products and services.

How will I promote it?

How do you intend to promote it?Will you be linking the photos of your product with your pages?Or will you add images of customers using your product to your product pages as social proof? Will you be creating contents around it?You need to define your SMM technique. (Look out for subsequent posts on this)

What tools will I use?

There are tools out there that are used to measure and track social media engagements and campaigns, create insight reports etc.some of them include fanpage karma, buffer, hootsuite etc.

How long will the campaign be active?

It is wise to set a measurable timeline for your campaign so that you can measure how well it faired which will inform you on how to go about the next campaign.

When you answer these questions, you will be armed with to-dos and resources with which to create your own marketing strategy.

Step 2. Define your goals or objectives.

Before creating any strategy, you must set goals or objectives that are Specific.Measurable.Achievable.Realistic.Time-bound.(SMART)How will you know your campaigns have been successful or not if you didn't have objectives from the outset?Your strategy will then revolve around your objectives. Here are some of the objectives you can have :
  • Increasing site traffic
  • Increasing conversions
  • Increasing brand awareness
  • Improving Return on investment from campaigns.
  • Improving Business- to -customer relationships

Step 3. Choose platform(s)

There are several social networks available but it is  not realistic and profitable to be on all of them. You should choose platforms that will help you maximize your campaign within your budget. The platform you choose will depend on what your objectives are and how much of your target market uses the particular social website because these platforms have different features and each of them meets a specific marketing objective.See 'the big four' social media platforms

Step 4. Implement the plan.

This is the when you put everything on paper into action.Whatever tactics or techniques you have defined, you need to take action about them. But be aware that it is constant engagement with your target audience via regular posts that makes you stay relevant in the social space.

Step 5 Monitor and Control.

This is extremely crucial in measuring campaign success.Facebook for example makes it possible to monitor your campaign and activity on your pages by the help of charts. You can tell how many people clicked your ads, how many shared them, what hour of the day did people view you ads the most etc. When you have these insights, you will be able to tell whether or not you are meeting your objectives and make adjustments where necessary.

  1. I believe that a social media consultant must be attuned to the company goals and aspirations if he or she is to represent them on their social media channels. I also think that outsourcing social media marketing is a good idea for a company looking to specialize in their core business. In any case, most businesses outsource marketing and advertising and I don’t see why social media marketing should be any different. You just need to be actively involved to ensure that you are represented in the way that you want
